In his longest journey ever, Jeroen Vogel ventures to Australia as a backpacker in search of the real identity of the country. On the way he lives in hostels where drunk couples have sex, engages in friendships with great characters, picks up random jobs to get by, finds himself desperate for work in a big city with thousands of other job-seekers and just when things go well, he finds his long-desired car burned out two days before a road trip down the Australian west coast is supposed to commence. Starting out in Melbourne, he quickly finds out that the real Australia can't be found in the big cities. He leaves for Alice Springs, and then moves on to Darwin, where he finds employment in the worst-run hostel in town. Going to Kununurra then turns out to be the wisest move to make. In "Backpacking in Australia", Jeroen Vogel uses tons of humour, wit, insights and facts to provide the reader with a funny and detailed account of his two year journey through that Land Down Under.
